HISTORY

Spam was first produced in 1937 from Hormel Foods Corporation based in Minnesota. The meat was promennet during World War II for the American military to eat. Due to food shortages from the war, Spam became a necessity to survive. Spam ended up in Hawai’i where the spam musubi was invented.

Japanese-American resident of Hawai’i, Barbara Funamura is credited in inventing the spam musubi. She would put grilled spam on a block of rice and wrap it together with nori. The spam musubi has become an endearing and beloved creation in Hawaii’s food culture.
