HISTORY

During the turn of the 20th century, Japanese immigrants moved to the Hawaiian Islands to work in the plantation fields. When working in the hot sun they found a way to make a cold treat from ice and the abundance of fruit from the islands. They would use machetes to shave down chunks of ice and top it off with homemade syrups.

As shaved ice became a shared treat amongst the plantation workers, hand-cranked drill presses were made to drill the blocks of ice more efficiently. Since then, shaved ice shops became a commodity on the islands and the amount of syrup flavors have expanded.
